HUDSON—The Columbia County Office for the Aging has received a $10,000 grant to provide home maintenance, repair, and outside chores for low-income senior homeowners.
Senator Steve Saland (R-41st) secured the grant for the program, which is designed to help those without available family supports and sufficient resources to complete important tasks associated with home ownership.
The kind of jobs that can be done, include repair or replacement of outdoor steps and porches to ensure safety; minor electrical and plumbing work; patching leaky roofs; fixing broken windows; replacing rotted wood components such as soffits and railings; lawn work and yard clean-up; and routine septic tank maintenance.
In a press release, Senator Saland said he is glad he was able to secure this grant to help low income seniors remain independent and make needed repairs so their homes will be safe and livable.
“Helping older residents remain in their own homes is at the heart of our mission. Senator Saland once again demonstrates his commitment to our community in an important and meaningful way,” OFA Administrator Kary Jablonka said in a press release announcing the grant.
OFA will publicize the service, recruit and screen contractors to perform the work, provide materials, schedule and oversee individual repairs through to completion and evaluate homeowner satisfaction.

ALBANY—Linda Marie Balaban of Chatham Center passed away April 17, 2023 at Albany Medical Center. Born in New York City, she was the daughter of the late Owen and Ellis Sundberg Cullimore.
She graduated from Great Neck South HS and went on to attend Brigham Young University, University of Utah and graduated with a BA in biology from Hunter College. After college, she worked as a lab assistant at Cornell Medical School where she met her future husband. Once married, they bought a home in Chatham Center, which they rented out while working in Tubingen, Germany, and adventuring through Europe for two years. They returned to Chatham Center with their new daughter, and Mrs. Balaban turned her attention to raising her family. As her children got older, she resumed her career in science, working as a cytogeneticist at Albany Medical College.
