CHATHAM–The school board recognized the achievements of both the girls’ softball and boys’ varsity track and field teams this week. Many of the players were in attendance at the board’s meeting Tuesday, June 19, to receive certificates handed out by board President John Wapner.

The girls’ softball team clinched the New York State Class B Championship June 9 with a 4 to 3 victory over Mynderse, capping off a season in which they only suffered one loss.

“It’s an amazing accomplishment,” said Chatham High School Principal John Thorsen. “One that they will hopefully cherish forever.”

The boys’ varsity track team earned the Class CC Sectional Title May 26. Chatham junior Ross Wightman was individually honored at the board meeting for achieving All-American status. Wightman placed third in the 2000 meter Steeplechase at the Nationals in North Carolina on June 16.

The Professional Development Plan (PDP) for the Chatham Central School District’s 2012-13 year was also presented at the board meeting. The theme for next year’s plan will be, “How do I know what my students have learned?”

After conducting needs and data analysis, as well as reflecting on last year’s plan, the focus will be on six areas for improvement: assessment and use of data, students with disabilities, literacy and reading, mathematics, common core and 21st century skills, and state and federal mandates, including the Dignity for All Students Act. The act is an amendment to the New York Education Law intended to create a school environment free of harassment and discrimination.

In addition, the Board approved the agreement between the Chatham and New Lebanon school districts to share a Special Education director. While the two districts had previously decided not to pursue a merger, they have been working together to find ways to save money and increase program opportunities available to students. Chatham will purchase half of the time of the Special Education director.

The Facilities Study Team will present its findings to the board during a special meeting in the Chatham High School Library Tuesday June, 26 at 6:30 p.m.
