KINDERHOOK–The Ichabod Crane school board discussed next year’s school budget at the regular meeting Tuesday, March 4. Right now the district is anticipating a tax levy increase of 2.16%.
According to a presentation given to the board by Superintendent of Schools George Zini, the appropriations for the 2014-15 school budget are about $35.5 million, an increase of 1.81% over the current year.
“Under 2% is pretty good,” said Mr. Zini of the budget the increase. He stressed that these numbers are always changing, but the administration does know the costs for employee benefits and some of the other costs. He told the board special education costs are down while transportation will be up for next year.
Right now the district is looking at a shortfall of about $133,000, which Mr. Zini said can be solved with more state aid. “If there is no more aid, we want to look at ways to close the gap,” he told the board.
The board will hold a special budget meeting Tuesday, March 25 in the high school auditorium at 7 p.m. Information about the budget will also be posted on the school’s website, www.ichabodcrane.org.
Residents will vote on the 2014-15 budget May 20. The ballot will include a $2.3-million capital improvement project proposition, and a $372,000 bus purchasing proposal.
Voters will also fill three seats on the Board of Education, seats now held by John Chandlers, Susan Ramos and Cheryl Trefzger. Petitions to run for the board will be available at the district office beginning April 7.
At last week’s meeting the board accepted the resignations due to retirement of several long-term district employees. Teaching assistants Helen Pollock and Barbara D’Alberto, who have worked in the district since 1987 and 1986 respectively, are both retiring in June. Teachers Sharon Wall, at ICC since 1978, John Wall, since 1983, and Jeanne Cass, since 1992, will be leaving the district in June as well. “We are truly going to miss all these people,” said board President Anthony Welcome.
The next board meeting will be the special budget meeting on March 25. The next regular meeting will be April 1 at 7 p.m.
