CHATHAM — Village Police Chief Kevin Boehme has retired after 35 years on the force. Mr. Boehme’s retirement became official as of 3 p.m. on Monday March 21.
Mr. Boehme filed the paperwork to retire last fall, said Village Clerk/Treasurer Carol Simmons. She said village officials knew this was coming and that Mr. Boehme had worked 15 years past his eligibility for retirement, which is 20 years on the force. Ms. Simmons said that she did not know whether there will be a new chief. The department has a deputy chief, Mark Leggett, who will stay in that position, according to Ms. Simmons.
Mayor-elect Tom Curran said in an email to The Columbia Paper that Chief Boehme told him about his retirement Monday and asked about working part-time on the force.
Mr. Boehme’s older brother, Paul, is the current mayor of the village and will hold that post until the first Monday in April.
The village board was scheduled to conduct a water and sewer meeting Thursday March 25 at 7 p.m. at the Tracy Memorial.
The board cancelled a scheduled budget workshop meeting planned for 6 p.m. Thursday, before the regular meeting.
