Austerlitz crash claims young woman’s life

Lance Wheeler Photo.AUSTERLITZ—New Lebanon State Police are investigating a two-vehicle fatal crash that occurred on Route 22 just north of the Route 203 intersection at 10:30 a.m., December 12.

A preliminary investigation reveals that a 20-year-old woman was driving north, down a hill, when she lost control of her vehicle on the slush- and ice-covered road, slid sideways and crossed into the southbound lane. The operator of a southbound vehicle, Brett Anderson, 43, of Dover Plains was unable to avoid the collision.

The woman died at the scene. The Chatham Rescue Squad took Mr.  Anderson to the Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, Mass., for treatment of serious injuries.

The identity of the woman victim will be released by State Police after her immediate family is notified.

In addition to New Lebanon State Police, the crash was investigated by the Livingston State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation, the State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit and Columbia County Coroner Angelo Nero.

The Austerlitz Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the Red Rock Fire Department, Canaan Fire Department and the Columbia County Fire Coordinators Office.

Chatham Rescue was assisted at the scene by the Valatie and Greenport rescue squads.

All units were clear and the road reopened at 3 p.m.
