PHILMONT–Plans are “rolling right along” for this year’s Philmont Community Day, Trustee Doug Cropper told the Village Board Monday.
Villager Richard Howard has stepped up to the plate, Mr. Cropper said, and planning for the July 10 event is well under way.
The next planning session is Monday, March 29, at 6 p.m. at the Village Hall. All are welcome–in fact, urged–to attend.
Planners hope to bring back a fireworks display–absent the past few years because of costs–as the day’s grand finale. To that end, the Village Board voted Monday to appropriate $2,000 from the Celebration Fund for fireworks.
Another long-awaited event, opening of the Philmont Public Library’s Cultural Center, is at hand, Interim Librarian Karen Garafolo told the board. The grand opening is set for the afternoon of Saturday, April 10. But residents can get an early look at the center at the library’s book sale Friday, March 26 through Monday, March 29, with a bake sale Saturday the 27th.
“Finally,” Ms. Garafolo said, “we don’t have to worry about the weather.”
She also said donations for the center are still welcome: “Our budget is $140,000, and we’re still about $8,000 shy,” she said.
Also at the meeting, trustees:
*Reappointed Charles Hoag acting town justice
*Authorized Mayor Clarence Speed to execute a lease with Philmont Beautification for the Pocket Park in the village
*Heard from Clerk/Treasurer Eilene Morris that the village office will be closed Good Friday, April 2
*Heard complaints from residents about how the village handled plowing after the most recent snowstorm. One objected to having his vehicle towed; the other said his was plowed in.
Mayor Speed ended the discussion, remarking, “That’s the thing about snow–when it comes down, you’ve got to push it somewhere.”
