Philmont Mayor re-elected by 2-to-1 margin

PHILMONT–Mayor Clarence “Skip” Speed easily won re-election Tuesday, besting challenger Brian Wheeler 190 votes to 89.

Some 289 of the village’s roughly 700 registered voters came to the polls, according to Clerk-Treasurer Eilene Morris.

Running unopposed, Trustees Larry Ostrander and Doug Cropper received 202 and 213 votes respectively.

In a brief monthly meeting Monday evening, the Village Board:

*Heard Al Wassenhove praise village officials for “taking a strong stand” against a since-abandoned move by the county to spend $16,000 to study moving the Pine Haven nursing/rehab facility to the old Ockawamick School. That would require extending the Philmont sewer system to the site, something Mayor Speed told the county is not going to happen.

*Presented certificates of appreciation to Mitchell Burch for his 10 years’ service as president of the Philmont Santa Claus Club, and to Dick Howard for his work organizing the village’s annual Christmas parade.

*Heard from Trustee Barbara Sagal that efforts continue to find a new home for the former Philmont Rescue Squad’s ambulance, currently taking up space in the firehouse. She blamed the delay on a lawyer who “we found out had done nothing.”

*Heard from Mayor Speed that the village food co-op planned for the Stewart’s Shop site is moving forward. “They’re incorporating as we speak,” he said, “and they should start up by the end of May.”

*Learned from Mr. Howard that planning is well under way for this year’s Philmont Community Day, Saturday, July 9. Events include a parade, fishing derby, car show, tractor pull, youth trap shooting, police softball games and fireworks. Community Day planners will meet again Monday, April 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the Village Hall. Volunteers and new ideas are always welcome, Mr. Howard said.

*Set an organization meeting and budget hearing for Monday, April 4 at 7 p.m. at the Village Hall.
