The Samascott pick-your-own orchard in Kinderhook was very busy on Saturday, September 21. For the Stollow and Cavagnaro families who came together, it is a family tradition through many generations. Elijah and Ethan Cavagnaro hold up their perfect apples for inspection. Photo by David Lee

Philip Orchards are interspersed through wooded hillsides on 9H in Claverack and feature some vintage apple varieties such as Rhode Island Greening and Northern Spy. Pictured (front, l to r) are Rosie and Evie Abady, (back, l to r) are Troy Daniels, Aaron and Chelsea Abady and Melissa Schuman. They will use their apples for pies, crisps, salads and snacks. Some of the older tart varieties such as the greenings and northern spys are better for cooking. Photo by David Lee
Bill and Rebecca Hamm picked apples with their grandchildren Ruth, Addison and Rachel at Samascott. They will use their apples for juice, crisp and pie for Thanksgiving, and for a snack with peanut butter. Photo by David Lee
