CAIRO — Looking for a fun — and free — time with the kids? The Greene County Youth Fair opens Thursday and is one of the only free fairs left in New York state.
Held at Angelo Canna Town Park in Cairo, the fair’s opening day will be Thursday, July 25, and it will run for four days, concluding on Sunday, July 28.
Get ready for plenty of fun — everything from animal shows to Irish step dancing performances to llamas, music, chainsaw carving demonstrations and lots of carnival food and games.
Local children will have the chance to show off their skills in agriculture, animal husbandry and the arts.
Each year there is a theme to the fair, and this year’s theme will be “The ‘70s.”
This will be the fair’s 70th year of celebrating the accomplishments of local kids. The youth fair first launched in 1949 when the leader of the Ashland Blue Ribbon 4-H Club, Alfred Partridge, organized a 4-H Club Fair at the Sutton Hollow School in Ashland, according to the organization’s website.
“From this small beginning, the youth fair has developed into the showcase it is today,” according to the website.
Over the years, the event has been held in several different locations. Early on, it was moved to the VFW Hall near Windham, and by the mid-1950s, it was renamed the Greene County Youth Fair and moved to Durham in 1957.
The fair was held every summer in Durham for 38 years until 1995, when it was moved to its current location, at Angelo Canna Town Park in Cairo.
In 2001, the fair was extended to a four-day event and through the years added more programs and activities, including a new agricultural tent implemented in 2002. The fair now boasts animal shows, competitions, tractor pulls, games, art exhibits, vendors and more.
Over the years, countless children have been given the opportunity to showcase their work and accomplishments.
“So, Alfred Partridge’s dream of a youth fair dedicated to the talents and interests of all of the youth of Greene County has come true,” according to the fair’s website. “He worked many years for this project, but he would be the first to acknowledge all of the willing people who worked side by side with him. The list is endless.”
Each year, the Greene County Youth Fair attracts more than 20,000 people from all around the region and bills itself as the last fair in the state that offers free admission and entertainment.
“The Greene County Youth Fair remains a celebration of the talents of local youth, enabling them to strive for higher goals and receive support from family, friends and their community,” according to the website.
This year’s fair will open Thursday, July 25, with the opening ceremony at 9:30 a.m., followed by exhibits and animal shows ranging from goats to poultry, along with a step-dancing performance, K9 demonstration, music and more.
The fun continues throughout the weekend with magic shows, tractor pulls, countless animal exhibits, a goat obstacle course, rabbit agility and hopping contest, and even a livestock costume class, and more.
