GREENVILLE — With temperatures expected to soar into the high 90s this week, the Greenville school district has moved portable air conditioners into many classrooms.
“Due to the anticipated heat this week, the Buildings & Grounds department has a number of portable air conditioning units on hand to be used in classrooms throughout the elementary and middle schools,” District Superintendent Michael Bennett said in an email sent to district families Monday.
Several spaces and classrooms in the middle and high school already have air conditioning, Bennett added.
The portable air conditioners were purchased by the district using COVID-19 funding for use during summer school. There are enough portable units for most classrooms that need it, with priority given to classrooms on the second floor and those facing west, which tend to be the warmest rooms in the buildings, he said.
At the middle and high schools, the library, special education rooms and the gym — which is where Regents testing will take place — already have air conditioning. Some classrooms in those two buildings that underwent renovations during the most recent capital project also have air conditioning.
There will be no school on Wednesday in observance of Juneteenth.
