CAIRO — A Round Top man was arrested early Saturday following what police called a 10-hour standoff at a home on Blackhead Mountain Road in the town of Cairo.

State police from the Catskill and Coxsackie barracks were called to the home on Friday at around 3:18 p.m. after a report was made about a “suicidal male,” according to state police.

“Upon arrival, troopers made contact with Nicholas Cassillo, age 42, of Round Top, NY,” state police said in a statement. “Casillo was uncooperative and combative during the interaction. At one point, he menaced officers with a large knife and a metal object, causing damage to a trooper’s vehicle before retreating into his residence.”

Crisis negotiators from the Troop F Bureau of Criminal Investigation were called in and engaged in dialogue with Cassillo for around 10 hours, according to police.

“After prolonged negotiations, Cassillo voluntarily exited the residence and was taken into custody,” police said.

Cassillo was arrested and charged with two counts of menacing a police officer, two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, and one count of second-degree criminal mischief, all class D felonies.

Cassillo was arraigned in the Town of Cairo Court and remanded to the Greene County Jail.

Also assisting at the scene were the New York State Police Special Operations Response Team, the Greene County Sheriff’s Office, and the New York State Forest Rangers.
