GREENVILLE — Walter Henry Ingalls passed peacefully to his Eternal Home, Friday, April 7, 2023, at the age of 92.

The fourth child of Stanley R. Ingalls and Eleanor (Goff) Ingalls, Walter was born in Norton Hill, NY, on July 27, 1930. He was married to his high school sweetheart, Shirley (Burnett), for 58 years and they had four children together. After Shirley’s passing, Walter and Donna (Goodfellow, Winans) enjoyed 12 years of marriage.

Walter attended Greenville Central School, where he was class president for for years and salutatorian of the class of 1948. Walter continued higher education at Grove City College, PA, and Albany Business College. He was vice president of the family owned business, GNH Lumber, for 50 years.

Walter became involved in many community organizations over the years including: Greenville Volunteer Fire Co. for 70 years serving as President, Chief and Assistant Chief for many of those years; Secretary- Treasurer of the Greenville Fire Commissioners; Greenville Rotary Club 53 years and distinguished as a Paul Harris Fellow; Greenville Norton Hill (Asbury) United Methodist Church lay leader and choir member; Greenville Area Chamber Of Commerce; Greenville Alumni Association; Greenville Republican Club; Building Committee of the Greenville Medical Building; President Greenville Central School Board of Education, BOCES Board; Town Planning Board; Greenville Local History Group, Forest Practice Board; Greenville Library Board; Greene County Meals on Wheels; Director Catskill Savings Bank, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Director Emeritus of the Greene County Savings Bank and bank appraiser for 50 years.

Walter loved traveling and RV camping with family and friends at Indian/Lewey Lake, family gatherings at Crystal Lake, and cutting endless cords of firewood with his crew of family “volunteers.” He enjoyed classical music, reading, Hudson River artists like Winslow Homer, and NASCAR racing, especially looking forward to trips to Watkins Glen.

Walter was predeceased by his parents Stanley (Eleanor; Ariel) Ingalls; brother Randall (Cornelia) Ingalls, sisters Edna (Norman Adams), Clairbel (Len Gardiner); wife, Shirley (Burnett); and his daughter, Kay (Eric) Sutton. He is survived by his children Kaaren (Kurt) Haushalter, Kevin (Karen) Ingalls, Krista (Carl) Haushalter, seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. In union with his second wife, Donna, Walter embraced into his family stepchildren Gregg and Kim Winans, seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life is planned for Saturday, May 20, at 2 p.m. at the Asbury United Methodist Church, 5830 State Route 81, Norton Hill, NY.
