GREENVILLE — Election Day saw Greenville’s state officials re-elected, but Democratic challenger Josh Riley defeated Republican incumbent U.S. Rep. Marcus Molinaro for the 19th Congressional District seat.

Riley won with 48.99% of the vote.

“I am so proud of my deep roots in upstate New York,” Riley told supporters after the race was called by the Associated Press.

“In my heart and in my soul, I believe in upstate New York, I believe in all of you and I believe in our promise and in our potential,” Riley added.

U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-NY, coasted to an easy victory with 55.6% of the vote to challenger Michael Sapraicone’s 39.3%.

Assemblyman Chris Tague, R-102, handily defeated Democratic challenger Janet Tweed by a margin of 61.8% to 34.6% to win a fifth term in office.

“I’m incredibly proud of the women and men who worked with me to get me here, and for them, I am eternally grateful,” Tague said in a statement. “But my re-election is not my victory alone. It’s a victory for rural New York. It’s a statement that shows our community remains engaged and focused on delivering the best life we can to every New Yorker. I will continue to fight for New Yorkers—for a safer state for them to live in, for an economy that works for them and for a future they can rely on. We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us, and I’m just as excited and energized as ever to continue delivering for all the people of the 102nd Assembly District.”

Incumbent State Sen. Michelle Hinchey, D-46, easily defeated Republican challenger Patrick Sheehan by a 56.5% to 40.4% margin. Hinchey will serve her second term in office.

Greene County races were uncontested. Keith Valentine was elected county treasurer and Alexander Begley Jr. was elected county coroner, both Republicans.

In the Greene County Legislature, incumbents in the Greenville Pioneer’s coverage area did not face challenges. Republicans Greg Davis will continue representing Greenville, Patrick Linger was re-elected in New Baltimore, and Sherry True was re-elected uncontested in Cairo. Incumbent Democrat Harry Lennon was re-elected in Cairo.

At the town level, Republicans Lou Kraker and James Huff ran uncontested for the position of town justice in Greenville and New Baltimore, respectively.
