Craig N. Ross Jr. will spend the next 47 years to life in prison for the Sept. 30 kidnapping of a 9-year-old girl from Moreau State Park. Ross pleaded guilty to the crime on Feb. 21 in Saratoga County Court.

Ross admitted to grabbing the girl as she was riding her bike on one of the park’s trails.

The kidnapping spawned a massive two-day search in the park and surrounding areas. The girl was found on the second day, hid by Ross in a cabinet inside a camper parked on Ross’ mother’s property.

Police were led to the site after fingerprints left on a ransom note placed in a mailbox at her parents’ home were identified as belonging to Ross. His prints were on file because of his involvement in a 1999 DWI case in Saratoga.

According to a statement from the Saratoga County District Attorney’s Office, Ross’ guilty plea saved the young girl from possibly having to testify at his trial, which was originally scheduled to begin last week.

Victim impact statements from the family and the young victim were read into the record at the sentencing.

Ross was given 25 years to life in prison for kidnapping and 22 years for predatory sexual assault. The sentences will run consecutively.

The kidnapping made national headlines and prompted a statewide Amber Alert.
