For over two decades, Unbridled has tirelessly devoted itself to rescuing the most vulnerable members of the equine population. Regardless of their past ordeals, our mission is to alleviate suffering and shield these noble creatures from the grim fate of slaughter.

In keeping with this tradition of empathy, Unbridled secured Tessie’s safety from a New York livestock auction, outbidding those who saw her only as meat. Similarly, Snowflake, a compassionate donkey mother, and her foal, Snowball, were mere hours from being shipped to Mexico for slaughter when they were rescued from the brink of despair in Bowie, Texas. By intervening at the crucial moment, Unbridled ensured that they, too, would be protected indefinitely.

Their harrowing escape from the dark shadows of the American equine slaughter pipeline illuminates the stark reality faced by too many equines. The stories of Tessie and Snowflake not only reveal the grim existence within this ruthless system but also highlight Unbridled’s unwavering commitment to providing sanctuary and a fresh start for those in dire need.

Tessie’s journey to Unbridled in October was marked by a sobering visit to the livestock auction in Unadilla, New York, a place where the fate of countless horses defaults to the weight of the flesh on their bones. Priced by the pound, their lives hang in the balance. With 12 years of loyal service to an Amish family, Tessie was traded in at the auction. Too old to pull the family up hills due to her declining strength, she was discarded. The only bidder on Tessie other than Unbridled was the horse meat broker.

FROM TESSIE’S PERSPECTIVE:

For 12 years, I stood by my family, through every season, every challenge. My forelock trimmed short, hooves shod, ready to serve, no matter the weather or the hour. When the hills grew too steep for my aging muscles, I was led to a bustling auction, surrounded by unfamiliar faces and the cries of countless others like me.

Tied to a wall, I awaited my fate, fearing I would end my days not in a peaceful meadow but as a commodity for the highest bidder. But in that moment of despair, Unbridled stepped in, a glimmer of hope in an otherwise dark place. It was as though fate had guided Susan into the ring just as I was led in. If not for their intervention, I might have been lost to a fate too grim to bear.

SNOWFLAKE AND SNOWBALL:

Five months earlier, thousands of miles away in Texas, Snowflake and her daughter Snowball faced a grim fate at a slaughter-bound stockyard. Two white donkeys with blistering skin from sunburn and no history had little to no chance of rescue, let alone on Memorial Day weekend, ironically a holiday that promised freedom and celebration for many.

While Snowflake and Snowball teetered on the edge of oblivion in Texas, Unbridled supporters rallied the funds to save their lives and ship them from Texas to New York.

Upon their arrival at Unbridled in early June, Snowflake and her daughter Snowball began their journeys toward recovery. Terrified, tender-skinned and starving, it took the pair six months to heal and begin to express their fun and witty personalities. Donkeys are playful and mischievous in an endearing way. Snowball, once a tiny shadow behind her mother, has grown into a vibrant presence. She is taller than her mother, has her own stall, and friends in Arnie the Mule and Sweet Pea, the two-year-old daughter of Ginger.

Tessie’s coat is now lustrous and dappled. Over the winter, she gained about 200 pounds. She is continuing to work through defensive behaviors she developed as a result of maltreatment. In her previous life as an Amish buggy horse, she was tethered and made to work no matter her condition. To be touched was not an act of kindness but a matter of use, like starting a car. The apathy and indifference took their toll on Tessie.

Unbridled’s Sanctuary is a crucible of transformation. Here, Tessie and Snowflake, once mere statistics in the cruel calculus of the slaughter pipeline, have not only regained their strength but have also brought new life into the world – both are pregnant, underscoring even more the miraculous nature of their rescue. Their redemption is a stark reminder of the many pregnant equines discarded each year, their potential for life extinguished before having the chance to take their first breath.

Understanding the intricacies of equine gestation and care is paramount at Unbridled, especially given the unknown histories of Tessie and Snowflake. The Sanctuary’s adept handling of their pregnancies showcases a profound commitment to life at every stage, reinforcing the belief in the intrinsic value of every equine.

This Mother’s Day, as we celebrate Tessie’s and Snowflake’s journey and the arrival of new life, we also honor the ethos of Unbridled. This sanctuary does not just save lives, it champions the cause of dignity and compassion for all equines. As we reflect on the impact of Unbridled’s work, we are reminded of the powerful bond between humans and animals, and the responsibility we carry to protect and cherish it.

In telling these stories, we not only give voice to those who cannot speak for themselves but also illuminate the path to a kinder world. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of Tessie, Snowflake, and all who find refuge at Unbridled. Their tales of survival and rebirth inspire us to envision a future where compassion triumphs over cruelty, and every life is treasured.
