The first major heat wave of 2024 continues.
Heat advisories issued by the National Weather Service at Albany remain in effect for the entire region through 8 p.m. Thursday. Additional heat advisories may be issued for the Mid-Hudson Valley on Friday.
The heat advisory is in effect for all of eastern New York and western New England, with the hottest conditions expected in valley areas.
Everyone is urged to take precautions to stay cool.
“The combination of temperatures in the low- to mid-90s with locally upper 90s and high humidity will lead to heat index values or ‘feel-like’ temperatures between 95- and 104-degrees Fahrenheit,” according to the agency. “High heat index values during the day followed by warm/muggy nights will increase the risk for heat-related illnesses, especially for sensitive populations.”
Groups most at risk to heat include, but are not limited to, children, older adults, people with pre-existing conditions or disabilities, indoor and outdoor workers, emergency responders, low-income communities, pregnant women, athletes and people who are homeless.
