PRESTON HOLLOW — The Bates Christian Church will once again have its annual Christmas service, this year on Saturday, Dec. 7, at 5 p.m. at 1 Bates Church Road in Preston Hollow.

You can step back in time to enjoy an old-fashioned Christmas program in a church that has maintained the character and ambiance of a time gone by. The church has recently been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Children are encouraged and welcome to participate in the program. Everyone will join in singing carols. Santa will make an appearance and light refreshments will be served. Get there early to get a parking spot and a seat in the church. Parking is now available across the road.

Blanche Jackson, who lived up the road, wrote that the church was the social center of town.   Records show the church was organized on Christmas Eve, 1842, when Bates was known as the town of Smithtown and was a thriving rural community.

The building was erected in 1859 at a cost of $600 and with a seating capacity of 200; the church in its prime had 130 members but by the time it celebrated its centennial, membership had slipped to nine. Finally, only Blanche Jackson remained.

A small group of women called The Willing Workers kept the church in repair and put on suppers. The last supper held in the church was in the fall of 1959 as a celebration for the 100th anniversary, The group also organized plays in which adults as well as children participated.  Many of the young ladies played the organ.

Jackson remembered picnics with as many 100 people attending. The church never had electricity and has always been heated by wood stoves.
