GREENVILLE — If you are looking for another way to shop local this holiday season, check out the artists’ show on display at the Greenville Public Library.

The members of Arts Around Greenville, a program of Community Partners of Greenville, held their opening reception last Sunday to give visitors the chance to meet the artists and maybe take care of a few gifts on their holiday shopping lists.

“This is our first year doing this type of show, but we think it will be an annual event,” said Natalie Boburka, founder of Arts Around Greenville.

Boburka, the self-styled “ringleader” of the group, said there are works by 17 local artists on display in the exhibit and sale, and 48 artists are members of the arts group. Arts Around Greenville started about a year ago and has already held two popular studio tours and is planning more events in the future.

“We are trying to get people in the community in to see all the different types of people that live in Greenville,” Boburka said. “People don’t realize there are this many artists in the area. But it’s also nice for the holidays to shop local. We do it for small businesses, and now we are doing it for artists, too.”

Dozens of small works, from watercolors to pastels to abstracts and photography, are on display and available for sale in the Community Room at the Greenville Public Library through December.

Artist Debra Teator has 15 pieces on display and said Arts Around Greenville, and events like the holiday show and sale, give artists a chance to meet each other and be supported, and benefits the broader community as well.

“I think this is great for the community,” Teator said. “During the pandemic we all stayed in and didn’t get out, and finding all these artists in our own community has been so much fun. They are all here and we didn’t know about each other before Arts Around Greenville started.”

Teator is inspired in her artwork by the nature she sees all around her in Greenville.

“I do pastels, and mostly I like barns and landscapes,” she said. “Sometimes I do plein air (creating artwork on site), but that can be tough because the light is changing all the time, so you’ve got maybe a two-hour window to capture what you want to do, but after that you have to use photos or go back the next day and hope the weather is the same.”

Artist Tammy Liu-Haller is also inspired by the nature she sees around her in Greenville.

“I love animals and nature, and that is what inspires me,” Liu-Haller said. “When I draw something, I aim to bring out the intense detail of that animal and hopefully reflect the beauty that I see in it.”

Drawing inspiration from nature was a common theme for many of the artists whose works are on display in the holiday show.

“Nature is my inspiration,” artist Vicki Alderman said. “I have a small, 9-acre farm and I get inspiration from my animals and the nature that is all around me.”

For other artists, inspiration comes in other forms.

“It’s very hard to describe the art that I do,” said artist Alice Tunison. “It’s not realistic. I create whatever I feel in my soul and my spirit, and I let my hand do all of the work. It means you won’t see a dog look like a dog, or a cat look like a cat, which is very beautiful. There is lots and lots of powerful energy.”

Longtime Community Partners member Barbara Walter does an abstract form of art.

“I do alcohol inks on yupo paper,” Walter said. “It’s a plasticized paper and if you put liquid on it, it runs and makes it so the paints make very happy accidents.”

She said Arts Around Greenville has provided a way of reaching an audience that may be new to Greenville.

“Community Partners thinks it’s important to have an art component for the events that we do in the town,” Walter said. “It informs younger people about the arts, but it also attracts visitors. There are places like CREATE, who do this in Catskill, and there’s a group in Windham, but there wasn’t anything in the northern part of Greene County — in the valley — and Arts Around Greenville moved into that opening for us. It attracts another group of people into the area with different interests.”

Anyone interested in joining Arts Around Greenville can do so by visiting www.cpog.com. There is a $10 membership fee to join, which enables artists to show and sell their works in exhibits and participate in other events as well.

“It’s really worth it because we have this show here for two months, and as a member you have the ability to have your work in the Greenville library other months, too,” Boburka said. “We have monthly art salons that are open to anybody that wants to come and they travel from studio to studio. Several non-artists have joined because they love art and this is a good way to get your foot into the art world even if you don’t produce art. It’s a way of taking people who are a little nervous about going outside of their comfort zone and having a group to support them.”

The Arts Around Greenville Holiday Art Show and Sale was open on select dates in November and will again be open at the Greenville library on Dec. 16, from 1-3 p.m. The exhibit can also be opened by library staff upon request during regular library hours.
