GREENVILLE — A three-game youth baseball tournament is coming to Greenville and nearby communities, giving kids the chance to showcase their skills on the diamond.
In 2021, Salvatore Sciangula started a free instructional baseball program called Sandlot Sundays at CD Lane Park in Maplecrest, where kids would meet up and play sandlot-style baseball while receiving instruction and clinics.
Shortly thereafter, Phil Devlin came on board to assist. Both are from the Windham area and have been coaching the MountainTop Little League Mets. The league covers the Windham and Hunter Mountain areas.
In 2021, Sciangula’s son played exclusively at MountainTop for the summer. Last year, he played spring ball for Greenville CYL, and summer ball for MountainTop Little League. Sciangula organized a scrimmage game between those two teams, which was a success, he said. It was the first time in a very long time that a MountainTop team played outside its own league, Sciangula added.
In the fall of 2022, Sciangula’s son played for Berne-Knox-Westerlo Little League because no fall ball was offered anywhere closer. So this year, all three teams will compete.
The first game will be hosted on Sunday, June 4, at 3 p.m. at Greenville Town Park, by Greenville CYL (team sponsored by Backyard Sheds) and will be played between the Greenville team and the MountainTop Little League Mets (sponsored by Hickory Hill Market).
The second game will be hosted on Sunday, June 11, at 3 p.m. at Westerlo Town Park by Berne-Knox-Westerlo Little League (team sponsored by Hilltown Tech and MTB Excavation) and will be played between them and the Greenville CYL Backyard Sheds team.
The final game and awards will be hosted on Monday, June 19, at 3 p.m. at the Windham Little League field by MountainTop Little League, with the Hickory Hill Market Mets playing Hilltown Tech-MTB Excavation.
Trophies will be handed out at the end of the three-game tournament. Sponsors include Living Faith Community Church in Maplecrest, which is sponsoring the trophies; free ice cream will be provided for the kids by Hickory Hill Market and Silky’s Ice Creamery; and free pizza will be provided by Tony’s Pizza, Windham Pizzeria and Reinhart’s Shell Inn.
Each involved League is hosting their own games and providing field dress, umpires, music and announcers. Free ice cream and pizza will be handed out to the players following each game.
