‘Pieter Bronck’s Beer Brewing and Early Brewing Technology’

RAVENA — On Sunday, Nov. 13, at 2 p.m., the Ravena Coeymans Historical Society will present its next program, a talk by Richard Muggeo on “Pieter Bronck’s Beer Brewing and Early Brewing Technology.”

Muggeo will discuss a brief history of beer brewing, its arrival in the Hudson Valley, and brewer Pieter Bronck from Beverwyck (present day Albany), who moved to this area in 1663.

Born in Astoria, New York, Richard Muggeo was raised on Long Island. He holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Hofstra University and a master’s degree in reading. Muggeo relocated to the Hudson Valley in 1974 to teach in the Catskill School District. In 2004, he retired from teaching and now spends his free time volunteering, gardening, raising bees, brewing beer, making wine, reading and spending time with grandchildren. He currently serves as a trustee of the Greene County Historical Society.

The Society will also welcome Rail II River Brewing in Ravena for a brief overview of Coeymans’ first commercial brewery and samples of their craft.

Please join in for this program, open to the public, to be held in the museum on 15 Mountain Road, Ravena. Masks are encouraged.

RAVENA-COEYMANS-SELKIRK — A shortage of bus drivers on Monday forced the RCS school district to cancel several bus runs for the day.

The district announced on its website Monday that transportation would not be provided for students on several bus routes at RCS Middle and High Schools, Pieter B. Coeymans Elementary School and A.W. Becker Elementary School.

“We experienced a large number of driver absences today in our Transportation Department and needed to think creatively about how to keep our buildings open,” according to a letter sent from the district to families Monday. “”Three bus routes were affected by these absences today, but the bus routes affect all of our campus buildings differently.”

Families affected by the canceled routes were encouraged to provide their own transportation if possible, and were given drop-off points where their children could be brought.

“If families are able, we encourage them to drive their students to and from school today,” the district announced on its website. “If families are unable to transport their students to school, please contact the main office so arrangements can be made for their instructional plan for the day.”

Affected bus routes Monday included routes 310, 329 and 338 at the high school and middle school, bus route A at Pieter B. Coeymans Elementary school, and bus route G at A.W. Becker Elementary School.

“As with all schools in the Capital District, we continue to struggle with staffing shortages in our Transportation Department,” the district wrote to parents in a Monday letter. “COVID-related illness, exclusion, or quarantine happen at a moment’s notice, 24/7, making it difficult to predict when a shortage will impact our transportation schedules.”

Students who are unable to attend school due to the bus driver shortage will not receive an unexcused absence, according to the district.

The canceled bus routes are impacted for both the morning commute to school and the afternoon return trip home.

It is unclear whether transportation will continue to be affected moving forward.

Lorraine F. Giannone, 73, passed away suddenly at her daughter’s residence on Friday, July 5, 2024.

Lorraine was born in Brooklyn on Aug. 9, 1950, a daughter of the late George and Fanny Clampitt Schroeder. She lived in Brooklyn until moving to Maspeth, Queens, where she attended Grover Cleveland High School. Lorraine was a resident of Maspeth for more than 40 years, moving to New Baltimore after retirement. She was employed as a paraprofessional by the New York City Department of Education.

Lorraine is survived by her daughter, Nicole and son-in-law, Frank Astarita; grandchildren, Gianna and Frankie; brother, John, and sister-in-law, Carol Schroeder; nieces, Doreen Russotto, Barbara Mongillo, Colleen Buonavita, Kelly Althouse; nephews, Christopher Schroeder and Gino Russotto.

Calling hours were Wednesday, July 10, from 3-7 p.m. at A.J. Cunningham Funeral Home, 9 Main St., Ravena, with a service at 6:30 p.m. Following cremation, burial was private.
